Through the ages, elements of dress have signified status and embodied artistic inclinations of each era. Louis XIV said, “Fashion is the Mirror of History,” and so it was then and has been ever since! We will show examples of how civilizations and individuals past and present have used symbolic clothing styles and details to define themselves. We will also explain why the idea that our cultural obsession with lifestyle branding is really a recycled fashionable idea that is nothing new!
Ms. Capps holds an MFA in Stage Design from Northwestern University. She is on the faculty at Vanderbilt University, where she designs the four-show season for the Theatre Department, runs the University Costume Shop, and teaches classes in Costume Design and The History of Western Fashion. She has also worked as a freelance costume designer for theatre and dance throughout the country.
