Since the birth of our solar system, meteorites have been hurling around space smashing into the various planets, the moon, and earth. When they finally do hit another heavenly body, not only do they demonstrate the laws of physics, they definitely leave a mark – an impact crater.
It wasn’t until the 20th Century, initiated by the NASA moon missions, that scientists seriously considered the prospect that these celestial features are also found on earth. After scientists learned to recognize impact craters on earth, many have been located and studied. Two of those impact craters studied by NASA scientists are found in Tennessee.
Join us in the first floor meeting room of the Main Library to learn more about our Tennessee impact craters.
