Soleus-
What is it? A SINGLE joint muscle behind your calf
Action: basically the same thing as the calf!
Gastroc (calf): the larger of the two muscles and a TWO joint muscle
Action: support, point foot down, walk, run, jump, etc
How to stretch the SOLEUS! Remember it’s a single joint muscle, so in order to target the soleus, you have to take the gastroc out of the equation!
For a soleus stretch, you want to bend the knee! (First pic) The soleus only attaches at the ankle, so by bending the knee, you take the gastroc out!
To stretch the gastroc, you want to keep your knee straight! (Second pic) because the gastroc attaches to both the knee and the ankle, by keeping the knee straight you target the entire muscle!
Which is better? Both are amazing! But if you’re having pain, unfortunately this stretch won’t be enough…
