My Down South trip continues. After leaving the Stones River National Battlefield in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, I drove to the Franklin Battlefield south of Nashville. After Union General William T. Sherman captured Atlanta, the Confederates sent General John Bell Hood into Tennessee to disrupt Sherman’s communication and supply lines with the ultimate goal of capturing Union-held Nashville. Opposing Hood was Union General John Schofield. Their armies came together in Franklin where Schofield built strong defensive earthworks around the town. Hood’s army took heavy casualties assaulting those earthworks. The Carnton House south of Franklin served as a Confederate hospital during and after the battle. Blood from amputations still stains the wooden floors upstairs. The bodies of seven dead Confederate generals were laid out on the back porch. Dead soldiers were buried around the property but when heavy rains unearthed them, the family paid to have them reinterred into what would become a Confederate cemetery next to their house. This was my first visit to Franklin. #travelblogger #roamingmichigander #roaming_michigander #roadtrip #franklintn #civilwar #ushistory #battleoffranklin #military #blueandgray #confederacy #johnbellhood #johnschofield #franklinbattlefield #franklinbattlefieldtrust #unionarmy
