She’s a beautiful brick Queen Anne on the corner of West Main and 10th Avenue in Franklin, Tennessee. Built by E. E. Green, who was a cashier at The National Bank, in 1896. He must have done well for himself as a cashier or did he?
The long and short of the story is that Green began to imbezzle money from his clients’ accounts and take valuable things from deposit boxes which may explain how he could afford such a grand home.
He was eventually found out when his sisters came to the bank to withdraw money for a gift to the University of the South in their brother’s honor and he couldn’t give them the money. Green confessed and ended up spending 15 years in federal prison. His family was forced to move away.
While this house has quite the scandalous past, it has been very well-preserved! It has nine fireplaces, a turret room, library, and over 4500 square feet. The house has the original door knob complete with E. E. Green’s name still on it.
This is one of the most beloved homes in Franklin. It sold in 2021 for $2.4 million. It was also the inspiration and setting for a novel called Finding Franklin written by local author Katie Shands. For all kinds of Franklin history, you should follow her – @katieshandsauthor.
